OCEAN WITHIN by Ali Kazimi

a two-channel stereoscopic 3D work based on a couplet from a poem by 13th century Sufi poet Jalaluddin Rumi

This meditative loop created using high speed digital photographic & stereographic 3D techniques explores fleeting nature of water drops impacting a liquid surface.. It is inspired by the 13th century Sufi poet Jaladdin Rumi's lines " Let the drop of water that is you/Become a hundred mighty seas/But do not think the drop alone becomes the ocean/ The ocean too becomes the drop.” Installed in Hoover House, Oceans Within also draws attention to our relationship with time, and in turn history, as we watch roughly 14 seconds played back eighty times slower.

Oceans Within was produced through a New Media Initiative grant awarded jointly by the Canada Council for the Arts and the National Science and Engineering Research Council to Ali Kazimi and vision science collaborators Laurie Wilcox and Rob Allison.
